The aim of building a giant religious monument came from Pedro Maria, a Brazilian Catholic leader in 1850′s . The idea then delivered to Princess Isabel but get rejected.

Brazil changed as Republic in 1889, and had had a new country rule. That is dividing or separating religious matter from state matter. In 1921 The Great Bishop of Rio de Janeiro apparently delivered the idea as Pedro Maria already had in 1850′s, named to make a giant religious monument.

There were some ideas of the monument actually. According to an article I read, one idea of the design was Jesus monument which lift a world-ball on His hand as a pedestal, that represent the world. In the end, a religious monument with Jesus stretched out both His arms were the chosen one.

The project of making Cristo Redentor Statue was started in 1926 in French, by a Polish-French sculptor named Paul Landowski, piece by piece. The pieces then shipped in Brazil and united completely in Brazil. Until now the giant monument of Cristo Redentor has been one of the Brazilians pride.
