In addition to the nature’s beauty, Forest Purwo also has some historical place which often visited. This historical spot is concerning so close to the Forest Purwo’s legend. It is believed that Forest Purwo was the last escape of Majapahit people from the Mataram Kingdom’s aggression.

The historical site in Forest Purwo is Pura Luhur Giri Salaka ( Giri Salaka Sacred Hinduis-Temple), which is the praying temple for Hinduist who live around this national park. The Hinduist in this area is believed as the inherintance of Majapahit, which migrated to Blambangan Peninsula.

Pura Luhur Giri Salaka in visited mostly during Pagerwesi Ceremony. Pagerwesi Ceremony is held every 210 days as a gratitude to God in Heaven for the science and knowledge God send to earth.

The gate of Mount Lawu lies in lines that connect Magetan-Solo through Tawangmangu, so this vacation spot can be reached both from Magetan, or from Karanganyar.

There are two prominent purpose of traveling here,

  1. to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the nature’s forest with it’s unique flora and fauna, and it’s clean and cool air, or
  2. as a part of ritual vacation. In Mount Lawu there are a lot of historical sites as inheritance of King Brawijaya V of Java./ Majapahit kingdom
